It is with words as it is with people: Actual beauty is rare.
We call things beautiful, not as such, but because of what they mean.

Because we commonly attribute beauty to whatever does us a favor,
We are reduced to puzzled despair whenever actual beauty says no.

Indeed, our calling a thing beautiful almost means it is not.
For how can we know it is beautiful until it betrays us?

A sage once said: " The trouble with these great philosophers
Is their only way of doing honor to an idea is to say the idea is true."

It is the same with words as it is with people: Actual beauty is rare.
Humiliated, we are no longer willing to call the beautiful beautiful...

E' così con le parole così come con la gente: la Vera bellezza è rara.
Noi non vediamo la bellezza nella sua essenza ma per ciò che essa significa.

Poichè di solito attribuiamo bellezza a qualsiasi cosa ci faccia un favore,
Siamo ridotti ad una confusa disperazione quando la vera bellezza dice no.

In verità, dire che una cosa è bella quasi significa il suo contrario.
Poichè come possiamo sapere che una cosa è bella finchè non ci tradisce?

Un saggio una volta disse: " Il problema con questi grandi filosofi
E' che il loro unico modo di rendere onore ad un'idea è dire che è vera."

E' così con le parole così come con la gente: la Vera bellezza è rara.
Umiliati, non desideriamo neanche più chiamare bello il bello...

Madrid sta leggendo la sua poesia ad una stanza piena di freddi relitti culturali.
Egli paragona i bianchi capelli sulle loro teste |   alla bandiera che segna la resa.
