The time will come
when, with elation,
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror,
and each will smile at the other's
welcome,
and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was
your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your
heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved
you
all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the
bookshelf,
the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.
AMORE DOPO AMORE
Tempo verrà
in cui, con esultanza,
saluterai te stesso arrivando
alla tua porta, nel tuo specchio
e ognuno sorriderà al benvenuto
dell'altro
e dirà: siediti qui. Mangia.
Amerai di nuoto lo straniero che era
il tuo sé.
Dona vino. Dona pane. Restituisci il tuo
cuore
a se stesso, allo straniero che ti ha amato
alla tua vita, che hai ignorato
per un altro, che ti conosce a memoria.
Tira giù le lettere d'amore dallo scaffale,
le fotografie, le note disperate,
stacca la tua immagine dallo specchio.
Siediti. Festeggia la tua vita.
