The American Academy’s Casa Rustica (in the present Bass Garden) occupies the precise site where, on Thursday 14 April 1611, Galileo made his first demonstration to a learned audience in Rome of his new invention, named on this occasion as the “telescope”. To mark the 400th anniversary of this historic achievement, the Academy is offering three events, starting on Thursday 7 April 2011 (5 PM), with an installment of the AAR’s “Conversation that Matters” series.

La Casa Rustica dell’American Academy in Rome è situata esattamente nel luogo in cui, il 14 aprile 1611, Galileo Galilei diede per la prima volta dimostrazione della sua nuova invenzione, il cannocchiale. Per celebrare i 400 anni da questo avvenimento storico l’Accademia organizzerà un evento all’aperto della durata di un’intera serata in cui si alterneranno momenti di musica, di lettura, di performance multimediale e di osservazione della volta celeste con la partecipazione del pubblico. Allo spettacolo parteciperanno Huck Hodge e Paul Rudy, attualmente borsisti in composizione musicale dell’Accademia; interverranno anche Dava Sobel, autrice del libro Galileo’s Daughter, l’astronomo gesuita Don Consolmagno, autore dei libri Turn Left at Orion (trad. it. A Orione svolta a sinistra) e Brother Astronomer, e curatore della collezione vaticana di meteoriti conservata a Castel Gandolfo, e molti altri. L’evento è organizzato in collaborazione con Enzo Aronica (FontanonEstate).
