Composed upon Westminster Bridge, September 3, 1802
By William Wordsworth

Did you see it is very useful to date poems?
Avete notato quanto sia utile datare le poesie?

Earth has not anything to show more fair:
Dull would he be of soul who could pass by
A sight so touching in majesty:
This City now doth, like a garment, wear
The beauty of the morning; silent, bare,
Ships, towers, domes, theatres, and temples lie
Open unto the fields, and to the sky;
All bright and glittering in the smokeless air.
Never did sun more beautifully steep
In his first splendour, valley, rock, or hill;
Ne'er saw I, never felt, a calm so deep!
The river glideth at his own sweet will:
Dear God! the very houses seem asleep;
And all that mighty heart is lying still!

La terra non può mostrare nulla di più bello:
Sciocco sarebbe colui che ignorasse
Una vista così toccante nella sua grandezza:
Questa Città ora indossa, come un abito
La bellezza del mattino; silenti, nudi,
Navi, torri, cupole, teatri e templi giacciono
Dischiusi sui campi, e sotto il cielo;
Tutti chiari e scintillanti nell'aria tersa.
Giammai il sole immerse più magnificamente
Nel suo primo splendore, valli, rocce, o colline;
Giammai io vidi, nè sentii, una così profonda calma!
Il fiume scorre secondo la sua dolce volontà;
Mio Dio! le case stesse sembrano dormire;
E tutto quel possente cuore, calmo giace!
