Oggi vi parlo di un musical di cui non sapevo nulla e che mi ha incuriosito molto. Il tutto è partito da una canzone che mi piace molto e che si intitola “Feeling good” che ho sempre conosciuto ma di cui ho sempre saputo poco.
Ho cominciato a girovagare sul web e, com’è mio costume, andando sempre a ritroso, come nel gioco delle scatole cinesi, ho scoperto che:
Feeling Good (anche noto come Feelin' Good) è un brano musicale scritto da Anthony Newley e Leslie Bricusse per il musical del 1965 The Roar of the Greasepaint-the Smell of the Crowd e da quel momento ricantata da numerosi artisti fra cui Nina Simone, Sammy Davis Jr, Muse, Eels, Michael Bublè, Michelle McManus, George Michael. Ma molte delle cover più recenti si sono ispirate alla versione di Nina Simone, più che all'originale, al punto che spesso il brano è accreditato alla Simone.
Il musical è una parabola, un’allegoria comica sulle classi sociali e sull’ingiustizia sociale nell’ Inghilterra degli anni ’60. Esso dipinge il conflitto fra Sir, un prodigioso individuo che si ritrova sempre dalla parte del vincitore e Cocky, suo mite partner, che, invece, è sempre dalla parte dei perdenti. C’è, poi, un terzo personaggio che è Kid, ansioso di imparare tutto ciò che può da Sir, aiutandolo, al contempo, a tenere Cocky al suo posto.
Ma il musical non ebbe alcun successo in Inghilterra e non arrivò mai ai teatri del West End. Ciononostante, il produttore teatrale americano David Merrick lo vide a Liverpool e decise di farlo rappresentare negli States. Il tour ebbe talmente tanto successo che il produttore si rifece di quasi tutte le spese mentre lo spettacolo era ancora in tour!
Ascoltate la versione di "Feeling good" di Nina Simone e quella dei Muse che, nel settembre 2010, è stata votata dal pubblico su NME, un magazine online, la migliore cover di tutti i tempi, battendo persino la versione dei Beatles di “Twist and shout” e la versione di Johnny Cash di “Hurt”.

All began when I listened on web to the song “Feeling good”, a song I knew and liked but about which I didn’t know very much. Travelling on web (do you know the song from Jamiroquai “Travelling without moving?”) I discovered that it is a song from the musical The Roar of the Greasepaint-the Smell of the Crowd (what a strange title, isn’t it?), written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley and represented on London stages in 1965. It is a comic allegory about the class system in England and depicts the conflict between Sir, a portentous individual who is always on the winning side, and Cocky, his meek partner , who always seems to be on the losing end of the “game” the two incessantly play. The strange and amazing thing is that the musical failed when it was first staged in London but became an enormous success on Broadway stages, where it was brought by the American theatre producer David Merrick whose investment was paid back while the show was still on the road!
The song “Feeling good” has been sung from many and many artists among which are Nina Simone, Sammy davis Jr, Muse, Eels, Michael Bublè, Michelle McManus, George Michael. But the most famous version is that of Nina Simone, in fact many of the most recent cover of the song are inspired to her version.
