A different light follows the fields. 

Hawthorn blossoms whiten the earth – 

delicate, brief – like snow on water. 

There are badgers in the wood, the 

swallows home and nesting. Life, 

as you said, is – with or without us; 

you were gone before this bright

blooming, your room dark, the 

kennel empty. I want to tell you 

about the peonies, the evening air 

tipped with scent, everything green. 

Friend, I understand your grief 

and what it came to – no moral or 

metaphor, only the absolute truth 

of that moment: the step ladder 
placed, the rope in your hand.

  Una diversa luce sfiora e disegna i campi.

Delicati e fragili i fiori del biancospino

come neve sull'acqua imbiancano la terra.

Nel bosco sono arrivati i tassi e 

ai nidi tornano le rondini. La vita,

come una volta hai detto, è, con noi o senza di noi;

te ne sei andato prima di questa splendente

fioritura, e la tua stanza è buia,

il canile deserto. Vorrei parlarti

delle peonie , dell' aria profumata

della sera, di tutto questo verde intorno a noi.

Amico, comprendo il tuo dolore

ed il suo significato, non la morale 

o la metafora, solo la assoluta verità

di quel momento: tu che sistemi

la scala, il cappio nelle tue mani.
