Peter Riley ( 1940) è un poeta, saggista ed editore inglese. Riley  ha fatto parte del gruppo dei cosidetti Poeti di Cambridge, di cui hanno fatto parte, tra gli altri, J.H. Prynne,Andrew Crozier, Veronica Forrest-Thomson. E' autore di numerosi libri di poesia e critica letteraria. E' il principale editore e curatore di Nicholas Moore.

And all the people in the land, as the clouds clear,
     without priority, the fruit of work, all pain and
     sorrows over. These are the ghosts in the white stone,
     written in the strata: Go down, you blood red roses.
     And all the work in the land, as the stars fade, doesn't
     bear more result than a leaf reaching the ground, all
     its joys a history. Such are the songs that surround us,
     near and far to comforting me, shadows on the sea.
     So with some sense of purpose on a thick morning I
     pass by empty fields to a tree-crowned pinnacle.


E tutto il popolo della terra, mentre il cielo rasserena,
senza priorità, il frutto del lavoro, ogni dolore,ogni
pena dimenticati.  Sono questi i fantasmi nella pietra bianca,
scritti negli strati: indietro, voi rose rosso sangue.
E tutto il lavoro della terra, mentre la stelle scoloriscono, 
non ha più effetto di una foglia morta  che cade, tutte
le sue gioie una storia. Così sono le canzoni che ci circondano,
vicine e lontane per consolarmi, ombre sul mare.
Così con una qualche voglia di fare in una mattina di nebbia Io
passo  da vuoti campi ad una vetta coperta da alberi.
